What book got you hooked?

Can you remember the book that first turned you on to reading - that tugged at your heartstrings or tickled your funny bone - and plunged you headfirst into the world of literary delights? Share your memories with others by leaving a comment, below.

For Mark, Winnie the Pooh, and The House at Pooh Corner, by A. A. Milne, were the ones that did the trick.

He says...These books hold a special place in my (not so long ago) childhood memories. They belong to that rare breed that can be read with equal enjoyment by both young and old. Essentially all about nothing, the charm of the stories lies in their subtle characterisation and their wonderfully gentle humour. I defy anyone to read the chapter on poohsticks without having to laugh out loud.

The first book to get me hooked was 'The Lion, the witch and the Wardrobe' by C.S Lewis. It inspired my imagination as a child, then led me on to other equally exciting books and gave me a passion for reading.

Growing up with Bedtime Stories like "The Railway Children" and "The Waterbabies" meant I was hooked on books well before I could read but I can still remember the thrill of discovering Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness Quartet... the mixture of fantasy, adventure, friendship, magic and intrigue (not to mention a girl wanting to be a knight!) WOWed me, enriched my own imaginations and was my introduction to the wonderful world(s!) of scifi and fantasy :)

As an eleven year old I remember reading Blubber by Judy Blume from cover to cover one wet Waikato weekend. I recall my mother telling me to get my nose out of the book and dry the dishes...ah well some things never change! I still like to read and my mother still tells me to do the dishes!

I grew up on bedtime stories like the 'Swallows and Amazons' series by Arthur Ransom. They still have a special place in my heart.

I think the books that got me reading for myself were the 'adventure' series by Willard Price. "Tiger Adventure" was the first one I read...

I was never big on reading as a child (always other things to do like sports and playing board games!) but one book that did get me interested in reading was one called Eleanor, Elizabeth by Libby Gleeson. I loved the the mix of history and modern life, with a bit of adventure and teen problems in there as well. Very cool. I even read it more than once!

I started reading at an early age, but 'books' were never anywhere near my life until when I was six and decided to read the translated copies of 'Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone' and 'The Bad Beginning'...it was amazing- I didn't realize then that I was discovering a whole new world, but I was.
Then I came to NZ. For a while I didn't read anything at all- but then I understood hardly any English. Strangely, of all books it was 'Matilda' which my dad persuaded me to read that got me started- and I never stopped. For me, those three books were an introduction to the world of words I never noticed before.

Started with the "Secret Seven" series by Enid Blyton, moved on through Wilbur Smith, Alistair Maclean. Now really into David Eddings and Robert Jordan.
