‘Should Hamilton City Libraries' have a blog?’

OK, so we have noticed a growing trend of user generated content on websites. That’s you guys submitting your comments/thoughts/suggestions/ anything really… for others to read. And because we are always looking for ways to provide you, our customer with a better service, we thought we would try out the idea of having our own Hamilton City Libraries Blog. Maybe we can think of a much more creative name than that for our blogg space, but let’s see what you think about the idea first.

This is your space to make comment, express yourself, and communicate with us and other Hamilton City Library customers.

So – should Hamilton City Libraries have a blog, and if so, what kind of shape should it take?

Do you want to see book reviews and make comments on them? Do you want a general category where people can simply post comments about any library experience? Maybe you want to know more about the information literacy programmes we run. Or maybe blogging is not for you. It really is up to you.

Great idea

Yes! I think it will be an amusing forum

I'm assuming you mean a message board type of arrangement. I think it's a great idea, being able to compare ideas/reviews on books, and ways to improve the library service.

Really good idea but I think it should have an age limit as to who can post comments

Thanks for your comments and interest. We have enabled moderation for this blog which allows comments to be published only after the administrator has viewed it. Hence any undesirable words or comments can be edited out. This gives us the freedom to leave it open for everyone.

Can we recommend as many new book and CD titles as we like on the blog? If not, it won't be much use.

We already have a preferred system for recommending purchases for the collections. Please see the link on the Catalogue on our home page

http://www.hamiltonlibraries.co.nz/page/pageid/2145833128/Recommend_to_Purchase

However the blog could be used to assess the demand from other library users if you are wondering how much general appeal the suggestion could have. Obviously it's not sensible for the Libraries to purchase a book if there is only one potential reader.

Salut et bonjour Dawn!

C'est extra! I'm impressed this is in French on my computer - is it like this for everyones or just mine ? Everything on my computer is set to English (NZ) as far as I know. Barry.

could this be another example of the library profession not "getting" the new media / new information society...? discuss.

About bloggy time ;-) Seriously though, it is a great idea. I'd like to see a news blog documenting what is happening in our libraries (e.g., what are those new data projectors for? Seems like quite an expensive to project "Send your mind somewhere" on the wall!) And of course a blog gives us a chance to talk back.
Perhaps another blog could be used for new books and reviews--take a look at: http://wintecnewbooks.blogspot.com for a possible format.
Anyway, welcome to the blogosphere!

Yes, I would certainly use it

Thanks for your feedback on our proposed blog. We are keen to get new ideas on how we can use this communication tool .

To keep everyone update: our data projectors on the ramp wall are a new initiative we are exploring. You may/may not be aware that we removed the community noticeboards that previously occupied this space (resited them in the library) and we are planning to use the wall and projectors as a marketing tool to help us to promote library and literary events.
At the moment we are testing the technologies involved but we are sure you will be delighted as its true form and value emerges.

Thanks Stephen for your suggestions on the different types of blogs you would like us to have. We are definitely planning to create a New Items and Library news blog / RSS feed in near future.

How funny a blog site to consider the potential of having a blog site! Blogs are a great idea they are informal but informative! Go for it!

I think forums would be great... but what would be the point of a blog? Who would be the blogger? One delegated librarian or just whatever librarian felt like it...?
Set up forums -YES but skip the blog. Forums mean we (the book reading public of Hamilton)can post thoughts and discuss books and library goings on etc.
I might help to make the site a bit more user friendly first though

The idea behind setting up the blog was to provide our users with a forum to discuss. We are happy for you to start a post published from this blog space.

We are also looking forward to your suggestions to improve our site.

One thing at a time is usually the best way. Please allow plenty of time for your blog to become firmly established, before changing to any other form of feedback.

In this 'wicked' world today a firm moderator is essential. For those who don't approve there are plenty of other places to go. We come here for friendly and worthwhile interaction.
